Theater audiences in Draper can look forward to a full summer of entertainment, starting now. Draper Historic Theatre’s Charlotte’s Web: The Musical opens this month, and Draper Arts Council is already in rehearsal for next month’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Based on one of the most popular children’s books of all time, Charlotte’s Web tells the story of Charlotte, the barn spider (Araneus cavatica) who saves the runty pig Wilbur from a fate as bacon and barbecue. In this DHT production the humans in the cast are more than matched by a collection of intelligent and resourceful animals on the Zuckerman Farm. The animals sing about what interests them (mostly food and staying alive) and so do the humans (mostly summer, fun, and growing up). The tunes, written by Charles Strouse (remember Annie?) are toe-tapping (literally!) and memorable.

Wilbur is played in this production by Maddie Sueltz, with Becky Davis as Charlotte. Audiences will see strong performances from the Goose and Gander (Brooke Wilkins and David GrandPre) and Templeton the Rat (Erik Nielsen). Wilbur’s special friend Fern is double cast, with Elisha Garrett and Ashlinn Patterick sharing the role. We can also promise some of the cutest, most delightful spiders that ever came out of the dark corners of the theater wings and onto center stage.

Directed by Michele Rideout, with music direction by Stacy Snider and choreography by Chareese Carter, Charlotte’s Web: The Musical opens May 6 at Draper Historic Theatre (12366 South 900 East) and runs Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays through May 28. Show times are 7 p.m., with a 2 p.m. matinee Saturday May 21. Also, for even more family-friendly fun, see the show on May 14th and dress up in your best Country/Western attire for “County Fair with a Country Flair” night. Lots of yummy “Fair FARE” will be available at concessions. For more information and to purchase tickets, see the DHT website (www.drapertheatre.org).

From Zuckerman’s Barn to Egypt and Israel, Draper Arts Council will present Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Draper Amphitheater June 10, 11, 13, 16 and 18. With direction from Susan DeMill and Andrea Fife, this promises to be a strong production, with the 12 sons of Jacob (and their wives) played by a talented crew of dancers and actors. Director DeMill has already added some extra dancing, given the terpsichorean strength of this cast.

Although it opened on Broadway in 1982, this Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice musical actually dates from 1968. It was the first Lloyd Webber-Rice musical to be performed in public, and it has become a staple in community theater. A compelling story of love, forgiveness, and redemption combined with sparkling music have made Joseph an audience favorite for decades, and this production will only reinforce its appeal.

More information about Joseph and other DAC activities can be found at www.draperartscouncil.org.
